The habit of curling up on, in or beside a person's shoes, especially worn ones left by the door.
Many cats gravitate to their owner's shoes for a nap, draping themselves over a pair by the door or even trying to squeeze into a slipper. To human noses it seems an odd choice of bed, but to a cat it makes perfect sense.
Worn shoes are saturated with your personal scent, and scent is how cats build a sense of safety and belonging. Resting among your shoes surrounds a cat in the reassuring smell of their favourite person, which can be especially comforting when you are out of the house. It is one of the ways a bonded cat stays connected to you while you are away.
There is a practical side too: shoes are often tucked into a quiet, sheltered spot by the door, and their shape makes a snug, semi-enclosed nook that appeals to a cat's love of cosy, boundaried resting places. For most cats this is simply a sign of trust and attachment.
