📜 History & origin
The York Chocolate was created in 1983 by Janet Chiefari on a farm in New York State, beginning with the chocolate-coated kittens of two ordinary farm cats. She selectively bred for the deep brown colour and the gentle, sociable temperament, naming the breed for both its home state and its colour. Though it enjoyed brief recognition in the 1990s, the breed remains extremely rare today and is not recognised by the largest registries.
🧼 Care & grooming
The semi-long, silky coat lacks a heavy undercoat, so it resists matting and needs only twice-weekly brushing. York Chocolates are devoted lap cats that dislike being left alone and do best in homes where someone is around for much of the day, or alongside another pet for company. They are playful well into adulthood and enjoy interactive toys and gentle climbing.
🩺 Health notes
As a breed founded on a small but mixed farm-cat gene pool, the York Chocolate is generally robust with no widely documented hereditary diseases. Routine preventive care — vaccination, parasite control, dental hygiene, and weight monitoring — keeps them healthy, and their long coats benefit from regular checks for fleas and tangles.
