Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is one of the most resilient pathogens in veterinary medicine. The "panleukopenia" name describes the dramatic drop in all white blood cell types it causes — the bone marrow is one of its primary targets. Without functional immune cells, secondary infections overwhelm the body rapidly.

The intestinal lining is equally devastated. FPV destroys the intestinal epithelium — the layer of rapidly dividing cells that absorbs nutrients and maintains the gut barrier. The result is severe, often bloody diarrhoea, complete inability to absorb nutrients, and life-threatening protein loss into the gut. The combination of immune failure and gut collapse makes this disease extraordinarily lethal in kittens.

Survival rates vary dramatically with age and treatment speed. Kittens under 8 weeks who contract panleukopenia despite vaccination failure (maternal antibody interference is common) have extremely poor prognoses even with intensive care. Cats over 6 months who are treated aggressively within the first day of symptoms have meaningfully better survival rates.

Intensive supportive care is the only treatment — there is no antiviral medication. IV fluid therapy to replace enormous fluid losses, anti-nausea medications, antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial sepsis through the damaged gut wall, and nutritional support via feeding tube are combined in hospitalised patients. Blood transfusions may be required for severe anaemia.

The vaccine success story here is remarkable. FVRCP vaccination has virtually eliminated panleukopenia from well-vaccinated populations. Outbreaks now occur almost exclusively in shelters, feral cat colonies, and communities with low vaccination rates. The vaccine is safe, highly effective (>97% protection), and provides durable immunity — making it one of the clearest examples of vaccination success in veterinary medicine.

🔍 Causes

Caused by feline parvovirus (FPV), closely related to canine parvovirus. The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells — the bone marrow, lymph nodes, and intestinal lining. Extreme environmental hardiness: the virus survives on surfaces for up to a year and resists most common disinfectants. Spread through faeces, urine, vomit, and contaminated objects.

🛡 Prevention

The FVRCP vaccine (which covers rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia) is highly effective and core for all cats. Kittens receive a series of vaccinations at 8, 12, and 16 weeks, then boosters at 1 year and every 3 years thereafter. The vaccine provides excellent long-lasting protection. Do not let unvaccinated kittens contact outdoor environments or unvaccinated cats.

When to see a vet: Panleukopenia progresses extremely rapidly. Any kitten or unvaccinated adult cat showing sudden severe vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, high fever, or complete collapse needs emergency veterinary care immediately. Do not wait. The disease can kill within 24–48 hours of symptom onset. Even with intensive care, mortality in kittens can exceed 90%.
