Makes
3–4 small ramekins

🧺 Ingredients

  • 150 ml plain unsalted chicken bone broth, cooled (no onion, garlic, salt or stock cubes)
  • 1 medium egg
  • 1 tbsp of your cat's usual wet food, optional, for extra aroma

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 150°C (fan 130°C) and stand three or four small ovenproof ramekins in a deep baking dish.
  2. Whisk the egg thoroughly into the cooled bone broth (and the spoon of wet food, if using) until smooth.
  3. Pour the mixture into the ramekins and add hot water to the baking dish to come halfway up their sides, making a gentle water bath.
  4. Bake for about 18–22 minutes until just set with a slight wobble in the middle.
  5. Cool to room temperature, then serve a small amount; keep the rest covered in the fridge.
Nutrition: Cooling and setting broth with egg turns a drink into something a reluctant cat can lap or lick, adding both moisture and a little easily digested protein. The soft texture and warm, savoury smell make it especially handy for cats recovering from illness, older cats with sore mouths, or any cat that needs coaxing to take in more fluid.

📝 Notes

The broth must be plain and homemade or otherwise free of onion, garlic, salt and stock cubes, all of which are unsafe for cats. The egg must be fully cooked through — never serve this custard runny or raw. It is a soft, hydrating pick-me-up and enrichment food, not a complete diet, so it should sit alongside fresh water and a balanced meal rather than replacing them. Use within two days.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
