Chicken Liver Senior Soft Mash

A smooth, spoonable mash of tender chicken and a little liver, thinned with broth — easy on ageing teeth and gentle enough to tempt a senior cat off its food.

🧺 Ingredients

  • 70g cooked, plain, skinless chicken breast
  • 15g cooked chicken liver
  • 3–4 tablespoons unsalted chicken broth or plain water
  • 1 teaspoon plain cooked mashed carrot (optional)

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Poach the chicken and liver plainly until fully cooked, then cool.
  2. Blend or mash the chicken and liver together, adding warm broth a little at a time until you have a soft, smooth mash.
  3. Fold in a little mashed carrot if you would like extra moisture and colour.
  4. Warm very slightly to release the aroma, which helps tempt an older cat with a reduced sense of smell.
  5. Offer a small portion and refrigerate the remainder for up to two days.
Nutrition: Lean chicken supplies easily digestible protein and taurine, while a small amount of liver adds iron, B vitamins and a strong aroma that appeals to less enthusiastic senior eaters.

📝 Notes

Liver is nutrient-dense but high in vitamin A, so keep it to a small share of the recipe and serve as an occasional treat rather than every day. A soft mash suits cats with dental disease or missing teeth.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
