🧺 Ingredients
- 90g cod fillet, skinned and pin-boned
- 1 tablespoon plain cooked, mashed sweet potato
- 1/4 teaspoon cat-safe fish oil (optional)
- 2 tablespoons plain water, to loosen
👩🍳 Method
- Steam or poach the cod plainly until it flakes, then cool and check for bones.
- Cook and mash the sweet potato with no butter, salt or seasoning, and let it cool.
- Flake the cod and fold it through the sweet potato with enough water to make a soft, moist mash.
- Stir in the fish oil if using, for an extra omega boost.
- Serve a spoonful over the usual food and keep the rest refrigerated for up to two days.
Nutrition: Cod is a low-fat, highly digestible protein with plenty of moisture, while sweet potato adds gentle fibre and a little fish oil lifts the omega-3 content for skin and coat.
📝 Notes
White fish like cod is lean and gentle, making this a good light topper for a cat recovering from an upset tummy. Keep sweet potato to a small amount — it is a treat carbohydrate, not a staple for an obligate carnivore.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
