Duck Heart Taurine Nibbles

Gently poached duck hearts, diced into bite-sized nibbles. Heart muscle is one of the richest natural sources of taurine, the amino acid cats cannot make enough of themselves.

🧺 Ingredients

  • 150g fresh duck hearts (a novel protein for cats with poultry sensitivities)
  • Unsalted water for poaching
  • A pinch of dried parsley (optional, for breath)

👩‍🍳 Method

  1. Rinse the duck hearts and trim away any large vessels or fat at the top.
  2. Simmer gently in unsalted water for about 12–15 minutes until fully cooked through.
  3. Drain and let them cool completely to room temperature.
  4. Dice into small, cat-appropriate pieces — roughly the size of a pea.
  5. Scatter with a little dried parsley if using, and serve a few as a treat or meal topper.
  6. Refrigerate the rest in an airtight container for up to 4 days, or freeze in portions.
Nutrition: Heart is exceptionally dense in taurine, essential for feline heart and eye health, plus B vitamins, iron and high-quality protein. Duck offers a protein many cats have never encountered, lowering the odds of an allergic reaction.

📝 Notes

Organ meats are rich, so keep portions small — a few nibbles alongside a balanced diet, not a full meal. Duck is a genuine novel protein, useful for cats on an elimination diet, but check with your vet first if you are managing a food allergy. Always cook thoroughly; raw offal carries a bacterial risk.

⚕️ Before you cook for your cat

  • Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
  • Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
  • Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
