Trout & Sweet Potato Omega Flakes
Gently cooked trout flaked through soft mashed sweet potato — a mild, omega-rich topper for cats that turn their noses up at oilier fish.

- Makes
- About 8 small portions
🧺 Ingredients
- 80 g cooked trout fillet, skin and every bone removed, flaked
- 1 tbsp cooked, mashed sweet potato
- 1 tsp plain unsalted cooking water or plain water, to loosen
👩🍳 Method
- Poach or steam the trout fillet in plain water until it flakes easily, with no pink left, then let it cool.
- Carefully lift out the skin and go through the flesh with your fingers to remove every small bone.
- Mash the flaked trout with the cooked sweet potato until you have a soft, spoonable mixture.
- Loosen with a teaspoon of plain water if it is too stiff, so it is easy for a cat to lick up.
- Serve a spoonful at room temperature as a topper over your cat's usual food, and refrigerate the rest for up to two days.
Nutrition: Trout provides the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA for skin and coat condition with a milder taste than mackerel or sardine, while a little sweet potato adds soluble fibre and beta-carotene.
📝 Notes
Use plain cooked freshwater trout with no salt, oil or seasoning, and check twice for bones. Serve as an occasional topper alongside a complete diet, not as a meal on its own.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
