Turn the dreaded cat carrier into a cosy everyday hideout
Leaving the carrier out all year as a soft, inviting den — rather than only hauling it out on vet day — quietly rewires your cat's fear of it, so travel and vet trips become far less of a battle.

🧺 You will need
- Your cat's usual hard or soft carrier
- A soft blanket, towel or piece of your cat's bedding
- A few treats and a favourite toy
- A synthetic feline facial-pheromone spray (optional)
🔧 How to make it
- Take the top off or prop the door of the carrier open so it feels like an open den, not a trap.
- Line it with soft, familiar-smelling bedding to make it one of the cosiest spots in the room.
- Set it in a quiet corner your cat already likes and leave it there permanently as furniture.
- Now and then drop a treat or toy inside so your cat finds nice surprises in its den.
- Once your cat naps in it happily, occasionally reattach the door and lid so a closed carrier stops feeling alarming.
💡 Tips
- Never grab your cat and post it into the carrier as a one-off — that single bad experience undoes weeks of goodwill.
- A light mist of feline facial pheromone on the bedding an hour before travel can help an anxious cat settle.
Safety: Make sure a soft carrier stays propped open so it cannot collapse on your cat, and only ever close the door once your cat is relaxed and going in willingly of its own accord.

Carrier phobia is really just a lack of good associations. Turning the carrier into a familiar, comfortable everyday den is one of the kindest things you can do to make future vet visits calmer for both of you.
