📜 History & origin
The Aegean developed entirely by natural selection on the Cycladic Islands of Greece, where cats have lived around fishing harbours for thousands of years. Unlike most pedigree cats it was never engineered by breeders; a formal breeding programme to preserve the type began only in the early 1990s. It remains rare and is not yet recognised by the largest international registries, though it is celebrated locally as a living piece of Greek heritage.
🧼 Care & grooming
An easy-care breed with a single coat that needs only weekly brushing, increasing during the spring moult. Aegeans are intensely people-oriented and thrive on interaction, so they need company, play, and ideally safe access to the outdoors or a catio. They are natural athletes and enjoy fetch, climbing, and — unusually for cats — paddling in water.

As a robust natural breed shaped by survival rather than selective breeding, the Aegean has an exceptionally healthy, varied gene pool with no documented breed-specific hereditary diseases. Standard preventive care — vaccination, parasite control, dental hygiene, and weight management — is all that is generally required.
