📜 History & origin
The Siamese is one of the oldest recorded cat breeds, originating in Thailand (then Siam) where they were revered as sacred temple cats. They first appeared in the West at the Crystal Palace cat show in London in 1871, causing a sensation. The 'Applehead' Siamese (rounder head) and the modern 'wedgehead' (extreme triangular face) are now considered different types.
🧼 Care & grooming
Minimal grooming — their short coat needs just weekly brushing. Maximum companionship is required — Siamese suffer deeply when left alone and should ideally be kept in pairs. They thrive with puzzle feeders and interactive toys. Their loud, baby-like cry can be intense; be prepared for conversation.
🩺 Health notes
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Amyloidosis (protein build-up in organs), and certain respiratory conditions affect the breed. Dental disease is common. Crossed eyes (strabismus) and a kinked tail were once common but have been largely bred out.
