📜 History & origin

The Li Hua ('Fox Flower Cat', also called Dragon Li) is a natural Chinese breed developed from indigenous domestic cats rather than deliberate crossing. Prized in China for centuries as a hardy mouser, it became the first native Chinese breed to gain international attention when it was shown at cat expos in the 2000s. The CFA accepted it for registration in its earliest development class in 2010, marking a milestone as one of the first Chinese pedigree cats recognised in the West.

🧼 Care & grooming

The short, hard coat is very low-maintenance, needing only a weekly brush. The Li Hua is an active, ground-oriented hunter that enjoys interactive play, puzzle feeders, and having a job to do. Intelligent and food-motivated, many can be taught tricks and even to fetch. They form strong bonds with their families while retaining an independent streak.

🩺 Health notes

As a naturally developed landrace with a wide gene pool, the Li Hua is generally very robust with no notable breed-specific hereditary diseases. Standard preventive care — vaccinations, parasite control, dental care, and annual check-ups — keeps them thriving well into their teens.

Fun fact: The Chinese Li Hua was the first natural Chinese cat breed recognised internationally — and folklore credits one with learning to fetch a newspaper for its owner.
