📜 History & origin

Russian Blues originated in the port of Arkhangelsk in northern Russia, where they lived in the wild before being brought to Western Europe by sailors in the 1860s. They were first shown at Crystal Palace in 1875 and were sometimes called 'Archangel Cats'. After near-extinction following WWII, breeders in Scandinavia and the UK worked to restore the breed.

🧼 Care & grooming

Minimal grooming — their dense coat rarely mats and only needs weekly brushing. They are sensitive to routine changes and prefer a calm, predictable environment. Russian Blues build extremely strong bonds with their chosen person and can suffer anxiety when separated. Give them time to warm up to strangers.

🩺 Health notes

One of the healthiest pedigree breeds — few breed-specific genetic conditions. Some individuals are prone to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. They have a tendency to overeat when stressed; monitor food intake. Long-lived compared to most breeds.

Fun fact: Russian Blues are said to have been the companions of Russian Tsars and were believed to bring luck to any household they entered.
