📜 History & origin

The Snowshoe was developed in Philadelphia in the 1960s by Siamese breeder Dorothy Hinds-Daugherty, who noticed three white-footed kittens in a Siamese litter and decided to develop the unusual marking pattern. She crossed Siamese with bi-coloured American Shorthairs to fix the trait. The combination proved difficult — the white-spotting gene is recessive and the precise distribution of markings is hard to achieve. The breed gained TICA championship status in 1994 and remains relatively uncommon. The internet-famous cat Grumpy Cat (Tardar Sauce) was a mixed-breed cat with Snowshoe ancestry.

🧼 Care & grooming

Coat care is minimal — a weekly brush and the coat stays in good condition. Snowshoes are highly social and vocal, inheriting much of the Siamese personality. They follow their owners around the house, hold conversations, and dislike being left alone for long periods. A companion cat helps if the household is empty during the workday. They are agile and intelligent — puzzle feeders, interactive toys, and even leash training suit them well.

🩺 Health notes

Generally a robust breed with long lifespans (some reach 19+ years). The breed's relatively small gene pool means careful breeding is important. Some lines carry the Siamese tendency toward crossed eyes or kinked tails — these are cosmetic and don't affect health. Routine dental and weight monitoring is recommended like any breed.

Fun fact: The famous Grumpy Cat (Tardar Sauce) was a mixed-breed cat with Snowshoe ancestry — her permanent scowl came from a form of feline dwarfism rather than the breed's typical sweet expression.
