📜 History & origin
The Ussuri takes its name from the Ussuri River region of the Russian Far East, where it is believed to have arisen naturally from crosses between local domestic cats and the wild Amur (Far Eastern forest) cat. The result is a sturdy, wild-looking cat with a richly patterned coat. It is one of the world's rarest breeds — numbers are tiny, it is little known outside Russia, and it has yet to achieve widespread formal recognition, leaving much of its early history undocumented.
🧼 Care & grooming
The Ussuri's short, dense coat is easy to care for and needs only occasional brushing to keep its glossy condition. With its semi-wild ancestry, the breed is energetic, agile and strongly driven to explore and hunt, so it needs plenty of space, climbing opportunities and active play; it tends to bond closely with its own family while remaining reserved toward strangers. Secure outdoor access or a generous indoor environment suits it best.

As a naturally developed landrace breed, the Ussuri is generally hardy and not associated with the inherited disorders seen in some heavily man-made breeds. Its very small population means breeders must manage genetic diversity carefully. Standard preventive care — vaccination, parasite control and regular check-ups — is all that is usually needed.
