Cod & Parsley Fresh-Breath Flakes
Gently poached white fish flaked with a whisper of fresh parsley — a lean, low-fat treat that many owners like to offer as an occasional fresher-breath nibble alongside proper dental care.

- Makes
- About a week of treats
🧺 Ingredients
- 1 skinless, boneless cod fillet (or another mild white fish)
- A small pinch of fresh flat-leaf parsley, very finely chopped
- Plain water for poaching
- Nothing else — no salt, oil or seasoning
👩🍳 Method
- Check the fillet carefully with your fingertips and remove every last bone.
- Poach the cod gently in plain simmering water for a few minutes until it is opaque and flakes easily.
- Lift it out, let it cool completely, then flake into small, bite-sized pieces.
- Toss through the tiniest pinch of finely chopped fresh parsley.
- Serve a small amount and keep the rest in an airtight tub in the fridge for up to two days, or freeze in portions.
Nutrition: Cod is a lean, highly digestible source of animal protein that is naturally low in fat, making these flakes a light treat — while a mere trace of parsley adds a fresh herbal note without upsetting a cat's carnivore diet.
📝 Notes
A treat, not a meal — keep fish treats to no more than a tenth of daily calories, and offer fish only occasionally rather than daily, as too much can crowd out a balanced diet. Use only a tiny amount of parsley; large quantities are not suitable for cats, and curly-leaf parsley is best avoided. Fresh breath in cats mostly comes from healthy teeth and gums, so treats like this support, but never replace, regular dental checks and tooth brushing.
⚕️ Before you cook for your cat
- Homemade food must be balanced. Cats need taurine, and deficiency causes heart and eye disease.
- Treat recipes are supplements to a complete diet, not a replacement for it.
- Check any new ingredient against the toxic-foods list, and ask your vet before switching diets.
