No-Sew Fleece Cat Cave
A cosy hideaway made from a T-shirt and wire, with no sewing at all
A snug, den-like cave built from an old T-shirt stretched over a simple wire frame — the kind of enclosed, covered hidey-hole that makes a nervous or heat-seeking cat feel wonderfully safe.

🧺 You will need
- An old large T-shirt or a piece of fleece
- Two pieces of bendable but sturdy wire (such as coat-hanger wire), plus tape
- A piece of stiff cardboard for the base
- A soft blanket or cushion for the floor
- Strong tape and, optionally, safety pins or bulldog clips
🔧 How to make it
- Bend each length of wire into an arch, cross the two arches over the middle to make a dome frame, and tape them together firmly at the top.
- Tape the four ends of the arches securely to the four corners of the cardboard base so the dome stands up on its own.
- Wrap the base in the blanket, then drape the T-shirt over the frame with the neck-hole forming the cave’s doorway at the front.
- Pull the body of the shirt taut over the dome and tuck, tape or clip the loose fabric neatly underneath the base so nothing dangles inside.
- Pop a soft cushion in the bottom, set the cave in a quiet corner, and let your cat discover it in their own time.
💡 Tips
Cats feel safest in covered, enclosed spaces where they can watch the room from a hidden vantage point, which is exactly why box-and-cave dens are so popular. Place the cave somewhere calm and slightly raised or against a wall, and resist coaxing your cat inside — leaving a favourite blanket or a pinch of catnip within usually does the persuading for you.
📝 Notes
This costs almost nothing if you repurpose a worn T-shirt, and the fleece version is beautifully warm for winter. Make it larger with a bigger shirt for a chunky cat, or build two so bonded cats each have their own retreat.
