Warm Rice-Sock Cuddle Buddy

A rice-filled sock, gently warmed, makes a cosy heat-pad companion

A clean sock filled with dry rice and briefly warmed makes a soft, gently radiant “cuddle buddy” — the kind of low, steady warmth that soothes an older cat’s stiff joints or comforts a kitten missing its littermates.

🧺 You will need

  • A clean, sturdy cotton or wool sock with no holes
  • A cup or two of plain dry rice
  • A pinch of dried catnip (optional)
  • Strong thread or a tight knot to seal the end

🔧 How to make it

  1. Fill the sock about two-thirds full with dry rice so it stays soft and floppy, not hard.
  2. Add a pinch of dried catnip if you like, then knot or stitch the open end firmly shut.
  3. Warm it in short bursts — only until it is pleasantly warm to the back of your hand, never hot.
  4. Always test the temperature against your own skin before giving it to your cat.
  5. Tuck the warmed buddy into a bed or blanket nest for your cat to curl up against.

💡 Tips

Cats are heat-seekers by nature, and a low, even warmth is especially comforting to senior cats with achy joints and to newly-arrived kittens. Warm the sock only in brief bursts and re-test every time, aiming for barely-warm rather than hot, and let your cat choose whether to snuggle it or move away.

Safety: Never overheat it — gentle warmth only, always tested against your own skin first, and never left in contact with a cat that cannot move away from it. Check the seam often and discard the sock at the first sign of chewing or leaking rice, which could be swallowed. Do not use for a cat that likes to chew fabric.

📝 Notes

A spare sock and a scoop of rice cost almost nothing and can be remade in minutes. Make a smaller, lighter one for a kitten, or a longer draught-excluder shape an older cat can drape a stiff leg over.
