📜 History & origin
The Selkirk Rex originated from a single curly-coated kitten in a litter of rescue cats in Montana in 1987. Breeder Jeri Newman, who happened to be a Persian breeder, named the kitten 'Miss DePesto' and bred her with a Persian. Unlike Cornish and Devon Rex mutations (recessive), the Selkirk gene is dominant, making the breed genetically unique among the rex cats.
🧼 Care & grooming
Their curly coat can be prone to matting and needs 3–4 weekly brushing sessions, but rough handling or excessive combing will straighten the curls. They are extraordinarily tolerant and patient — ideal for families with young children. Weekly ear cleaning and nail trimming are recommended.
🩺 Health notes
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD, inherited from Persian ancestry), Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, and Hip Dysplasia are the main concerns. DNA testing for PKD is available. Generally healthy; their dominant gene means heterozygous cats have a broader genetic base than most rex breeds.
